ABSTRACT
Malaria remains a global health issue, including in Indonesia, with fluctuating case dynamics in Kulon Progo Regency. Vector-based malaria control requires an understanding of the microbiota associated with Anopheles vagus mosquitoes, particularly symbiotic bacteria that have the potential to inhibit Plasmodium development. This study aims to identify the morphological characteristics and proteolytic activity of symbiotic bacteria from An. vagus saliva. The research method began with bacterial isolates (SG2 and SG3) being subcultured, purified, and analyzed morphologically through observation and Gram staining, and proteolytic activity was tested using skim milk agar (SMA). The results showed that isolate SG2 was identified as Bacillus sp. and SG3 as Staphylococcus sp. Both isolates are Gram-positive bacteria and exhibited proteolytic activity, as indicated by the formation of clear zones on the agar. These findings indicate that symbiotic bacteria have the potential to degrade proteins that can disrupt the life cycle of Plasmodium, thereby serving as agents for malaria vector control.
